New industry to create $14.5M return on investment

About 500 new jobs are expected to be created in the next five years, as Antigua and Barbuda seeks to add the medical transcription field to its industries.

The government yesterday signed an agreement with two companies for the launch of the industry in Antigua and Barbuda. Interfix Ventures LLC will supply the technology and Transcription Relief Services Institute will provide training for the establishment of the industry in Antigua and Barbuda.

Medical transcriptionists convert voice-recorded reports dictated by physicians and other health care professionals into text format. It is a skilled job which, because of the critical nature of medical records, requires a high degree of efficiency.

As Interfix CEO Scott Faulkner explained, Antigua and Barbuda, along with the rest of Caricom, is seen as a good place for transcription companies because its people are English-speaking and have a high degree of technological skill.

Fitzmaurice Christian, investment promotion director at the Antigua and Barbuda Investment Authority (ABIA) said that by yesterday, eight businesspeople had expressed interest in starting local medical transcription companies. ABIA will require firm declarations and plans by January.

Philippines Firms Got $1.4 Million Transcription Contracts

Philippine medical transcription companies won $1.4 million worth of contracts with American clients during a marketing mission, the government announced.

A recent mission to an exhibition and conference of the American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA) in Philadelphia showed large US companies that Philippine companies can handle US accounts and has enough headroom for future demand, said the Center for International Trade Expositions and Missions, a part of the Department of Trade and Industry.

The association represents more than 51,000 specially educated health information management professionals in the US healthcare industry.

Industry projections show Philippine annual revenues from transcription at 20 million lines –translating to $1.2 million — and 130,000 charts for medical coding, amounting to $175,500.

CBay is likely to list soon, and has aggressive expansion plans in India.

Sri Lanka has still to tap the US$ 19 billion market in the US medical transcription business through the BPO industry.

Chairman/CEO of E-WIS Group of Companies Sanjeewa Wickramanayake told Daily News Business the US medical transcription market is a US$ 19 billion business which the country has not tapped yet.

Sri Lanka has high potential for attracting medical transcription ventures in the BPO industry.

Philippines and India play a dominant role in the global outsourcing business. The rising costs in India due to appreciation of the currency against the US$ have made US to focus more on Sri Lanka for business outsourcing.

Sri Lanka is also a virgin market with no possibility of competition for a good period of time for the medical transcription business.

"BPO is heavily dependent on human resources and Sri Lanka is an ideal destination for sourcing skilled people to the industry.

Unavailability of people willing to be trained in India and the Philippines provide another definite advantage for Sri Lanka," he said.

E-WIS and Decipher of India have formed a synergic alliance for selecting, training and inducting a highly efficient group of talented people, and the production process of transcribing files for medical doctors.

"We have invested Rs. 50 million for the project which commenced operations in January. We have recruited 100 as the initial stage and by the end of this year we expect to increase this amount to 250.

"We are also planning to set up another two similar facilities in Kandy and Anuradhapura. We expect to provide 1,000 to 1,500 job opportunities in the medical transcription sector, he said.

"We are basically focusing on the US market and it is vital to secure contracts in the medical transcription business to survive in the market.

Training is a vital factor in this business and we provide six months training for the recruits," he said.

"We expect to create an environment where all employees could work at their homes without coming to office," he added.

Medical Transcription - An Emerging Profession

Medical Transcription is the process of interpreting and transcribing the dictation made by doctors or other health care professionals regarding patient status, treatment procedures, diagnoses, prognoses, etc. With medical transcription of dictated data from physicians, the medical transcriptionist may also edit the text that is produced by voice recognition software. CBaySystems keen to list on Indian bourses

CBaySystems India, the healthcare business process outsourcing (BPO) services company, is planning to list on the bourses in a year's time.

"We have plans for listing on the Indian bourses. We are looking at further expansion of our infrastructure in the country, for which we need to raise capital locally. With our turnover to double next year, the opportunity for growth also increases," said Raman Kumar, Chairman and CEO, CbaySystems. The revenues from India operations are about Rs 120 crore and are expected to double by next year.

The company is planning to expand operations in Ahmedabad, as well as its Nagpur and Vizag centres. It also intends to build a campus in Hyderabad SEZ with a capacity of 2,000 people. The company has centres at Vijayawada, Guwahati and Hubli.

CBaySystems Holding, the parent company of CBaySytems India, is listed on the AIM platform of London Stock Exchange (LSE). The parent company will relist on the LSE after completing the recent acquisition of MedQuist, a Philips company. "With this acquisition, our turnover will move from $70 million to $400 million. We hence feel the company needs to be on the mainboard," said Kumar.

Lehman Brothers and SAC Private Capital Group hold over 55 per cent stake in the holding company. Both these players had invested $123 million in CBay, which was used for the MedQuist acquisition. Other shareholders in the company are Godrej Industries, GMO and Kingdon Capital.

The company will continue to look at fresh buys. "Acquisition remains a focus. We are looking for companies with capabilities in the medical transcription space, including receivable management. These could either be BPOs or companies with technology skills," said Kumar.

The MedQuist buy catapults CBaySystems into a leading position in the medical transcription business. MedQuist has nearly 8,000 employees in the US and this would boost the revenues of CBay Systems Holdings to $400 million (around Rs 1,680 crore) for this year. The company's revenue for the quarter ended December 31, 2007 was $57.7 million (around Rs 242 crore).

CBay's headcount in India is 5,500 and the acquisition will bolster its Indian operations. "We have still not decided whether MedQuist's work will be offshored. The decision has to come from the company's management team.

About 6-7 per cent of the business currently comes to India. If we get 10 per cent of the work to India to leverage the offshore capability of CBaySystems, it will be worth $30 million," said Kumar.

Madison voice transcription firm looks for strategic technology partner

Madison, Wis. - VoVision, a young Madison-based company that offers a Web-based voice transcription technology, is seeking to merge with a larger strategic partner that is interested in incorporating its technology into a unified communications platform.

Paul Hager, co-owner of Vo Vision, has accepted a business development position with the Global Technology Transfer Group, a patent asset management company based in Portland, Ore. Hager, who will represent GTT in the Midwest region, will remain with VoVision into the fall.

Hager said VoVision is not pursuing new business as it searches for a strategic partner - most likely a telecommunications provider.

Hager, a 2006 graduate of the University of Wisconsin-Madison, said the partnership option has become a company goal within the past six months. “We're at the point now where it's viable for the technology to be incorporated into another company's platform,” he said.
