Medical Transcription Industry Celebrates Health IT Week

As health information managers and professionals across the country celebrate the health information & technology industry this week, the Association for Health Care DocumentationIntegrity (AHDI) and the Medical Transcription Industry Association (MTIA) announced their support for a healthcare reform package that improves electronic health records (EHRs) as well as patient safety.

"Medical transcriptionists represent a workforce that is critical to the accurate and safe transition to the EHR that will improve patient safety, ensure the accuracy of health records, and free up doctors to do what they do best - attend to their patients' needs," said Susan Lucci, President of AHDI.

"We look forward to continuing to work with Congress, the Administration, and with healthcare professionals to implement reforms that will lead to a smooth transition to the EHR with a focus on patient safety first."

Today, MTIA, in conjunction with ICSA labs, an independent division of Verizon Business, announced the formation of the Medical Transcription Service Consortium (MTSC) to drive improved coordination of care and digital record exchange among hospitals, physician offices, and healthcare clinics through an effective framework, and secure and private IT platform.

According to MTIA, currently 8% of physician-patient encounters are documented via electronic medical records; by comparison, more than 80% employ the dictation-transcription process for this purpose. MTIA estimates that over 1.2 billion patient notes are dictated and transcribed annually, and currently the majority of those records cannot be imported into electronic medical records in digitally useful formats.

Working with Verizon Business, the consortium plans to offer an industry solution for medical transcription service providers to exchange medical records in digitally useful form. Verizon Business expects the platform to be available later this year.

Voice Recorders save Time

The recorder for digital voice storage for your job can be purchased online and paid for as an inexpensive business expenditure. Voice messages can be saved as long as you have space on your digital voice recorder and wont' degrade over time. There are cheaper alternatives to digital voice recorders, but they normally require a cassette tape and have less sound quality. Some of the digital voice recorders on the high end of the scale have range of recording time of nine to thirty-six hours or more.

By operating the memory capacity indicator on select digital voice recorders, you might know exactly how much time you have left to record. Digital voice recorders come with so many features these days like over three hundred hours of record time, but still small size. With the right digital voice recorder, you will turn audio files into typed text for your dictation files at ease. Digital voice recorders now come with recovery support in some models and capabilities that compare to high end electronic devices.

The big seller for many of the digital voice recording devices are actually how they come out and their slim, sleek designs. The recorder you choose to buy for digital voice recording should be compared and researched before spending your money on a company without a major name brand. There are different reasons why a person might feel the need to use a digital voice recorder for business or personal use. The recorder that just hit the market has wireless technology and is able to transfer files to computers without cables. The major seller for a majority of the digital voice recorders on the market has to do with them being easy to use and reliability. Digital voice recorders are used to record just about any event you can think of and sometimes they're being used without people's knowledge. When the digital voice recorder allows you to move messages between folders and split or delete messages, file managing is simple and quick to do.

Can You Really Work at Home in Medical Transcription?

Well, yes, absolutely. Thousands of people engaged in medical transcription work at home every day.

Working at home is a situation that many people aspire to, to escape the rat race of commuting, paying for childcare, wear and tear on the car. Medical Transcription does indeed offer that to those willing to go through the training and get some experience under their belts.

If you want to work from home, you basically have two options: You can telecommute as an employee, or you can do so by starting your own business. Medical Transcription is a career that provides you with both options.

There is a large market for medical transcriptionists. You can work from the hospital or physician's office or you can work from home. You can also start your own at-home medical transcription business. Medical transcription, at its core, is basically just listening to notes that a doctor has recorded about things such as exams, autopsies, operations and more, and typing out the recordings into a document that then is included in the patient's chart.

Using the power of the Internet, your transcription work can come to you as MP3 files over the web, so you needed get out of your chair to get your work! Medical transcription is not difficult to learn, but it can be somewhat expensive. There are a whole host of companies that offer distance learning via online courses, DVDs, books and CDs to help you learn the proper terminology so that when you graduate you can do the job well.

Make sure that you get your money's worth when you do make the plunge and sign up for training. As a medical transcriptionist, you will need to know medical jargon such as abbreviations, terminology and medical terms, and only the right resources will give you all the information that you need.

It can be somewhat difficult when just starting out in transcription to get a work-at-home position. Lots of employers out there want you to have some intense quality assurance scrutiny before letting you fly, so to speak. So they want you in house if possible. Indeed, the U.S. Dept. of Labor says that, really, over half of the transcriptionists in the workforce do actually work in an office instead of at home.

But don't let that discourage you! At-home positions can still be had today. All it takes is perseverance.

A good training school, one that is endorsed by AHDI, will have a placement assistance program, and they can let you know which companies are hiring for at-home work. And make sure you go to the transcription Internet forums and ask people which companies are most likely to hire you to work at home. Write down who they all are and how to contact them, and just go after them. Send a great cover letter, and call them as well. They will like your initiative.

Applying for a Medical Transcriptionist Position

Transcription developed gradually in the early sixties through different machines like manual and electric typewriters, computers, word processors, magnetic belts, cassettes, plastic disks and digital recordings. In the past, medical reports that were gathered for patients contain handwritten abbreviation notes that were very difficult for common people to understand. Nowadays, a lot of healthcare providers make use of voice streaming and dictation to make transcription more effective and efficient. However, since the medical spoken language is still too complex to understand, medical transcriptionists are required to convert the spoken medical records into typewritten form.

What is a Medical Transcriptionist?

A medical transcriptionist, also called an MT, is an individual who is in charge of converting or translating a patient's medical records to typewritten layout. Although transcriptions can also be done in handwritten form, a typewritten layout is often preferred because it is clearer and more comprehensible. These transcriptions are usually done for the purpose of charting reports and information. Much of the recordings that a medical transcriptionist works on come from either a Dictaphone machine or recorded tape.

A Medical Transcriptionist should be a practiced typist

Since the market for medical transcriptionists is growing, employers often look for a person who is a practiced typist with outstanding interpretation of what he hears through dictation. A fast typist will be able to lay out the medical records in typewritten form as the recording runs, without having to play back the Dictaphone machine or tape. This makes him more efficient in his job.

An MT should be knowledgeable with medical terms

A medical transcriptionist must have strong knowledge of medical language and terms. Since a medical transcriptionist has to record a lot of medical terms, it is essential that he knows the spelling and pronunciation of such terms. Without a good knowledge of medical terms, it is rather impossible for a person to work effectively as a medical transcriptionist.

Educational qualifications and skills required for an MT position

To be a medical transcriptionist, you must be at least a high school graduate with a diploma that is relevant to the field medical transcription. You will have an advantage if you have at least one to three years of working experience that is in line with the duties and responsibilities of a medical transcriptionist. As a medical transcriptionist, you must be able to comprehend dictation of medical terms and you need to possess short hand skills. You should also be good in verbal communication and spelling, and have excellent memory skills so that you can sort out, count, check and authenticate numbers with accuracy.

Other skills required of an MT

It is essential that you are able to use and operate some of the basic office machines, equipments and computers. A medical transcriptionist needs to possess excellent records maintenance ability and a profound knowledge of medical transcription practices and guidelines. You have to be resourceful enough to be able to use a wide selection of professional reference materials and work under pressure with limited time and minimal supervision. You must also have the skills to use proper grammar, capitalization rules, and correct punctuations. As you progress in your job as a medical transcriptionist, you will be required to perform quality assurance check to ascertain that the medical reports are correctly done. You will also have to understand and apply important legal concepts like confidentiality.

As a whole, an effective and successful medical transcriptionist has to be able to decide what is essential and vital to medical reports. In other words, a medical transcriptionist has to comprehend the medical terms used in the reports, instead of just being able to identify them. A medical transcriptionist possibly will not be able to determine which parts of a report are important if he has no fundamental knowledge of the terms used by medical experts.

One Rule for Google

John Gapper's blog : Google Voice, the company's new free phone service in the US (you cannot yet use it in other parts of the world) is a smart service that deserves to succeed. It does, however, place Google in a tricky position.

Google has come up with a clever way of circumventing the barrier to using Skype or other free services on phones. Instead of you dialing out, Google Voice calls your number and simultaneously connects you with the one you want, like an automated assistant. You either enter the number you want on a computer or you dial up the Google Voice number, enter the one you want to dial, and it connects you. There are some bells and whistles, including automated transcription of voicemail.

I have tried out Google Voice in beta and, although the service sounds complicated, it works smoothly and is a neat way of calling people in the US free, and those in other countries cheaply.

The killer application would be to be able to use Google Voice on a mobile phone, and avoid using minutes from your monthly plan. Accordingly, Google submitted a Google Voice app to Apple for the iPhone, but Apple is not co-operating. Google claims that Apple rejected its Google Voice application, while Apple insists that it is considering it. The affair is being investigated by Federal Communications Commission.

Medical Transcription Service - Can Outsourcing it Improve Quality and Lower Costs?

Want to organize physician's handwritten notes and prescriptions into electronic documents without spending a fortune? An outsourced medical transcription service is the perfect solution for you.

All medical institutions require computerization of medical notes for clean and compact record-keeping, insurance claims processing, quick reference, conferencing and various other reasons. Hospitals and clinics have long been hiring full time transcriptionists to do the same. But this is an expensive option and not the ideal solution if you have varying volume of transcription needs. Alternatively, you can give transcription duties to other clerical staff or use voice recognition software. But these solutions can be quite inaccurate, putting the health of your patients at stake. Your clerical staff may not be well trained for medical transcription and accuracy of voice recognition usually is too low to be useful. A medical transcription service gives you the best combination of expense, quality and accuracy.

How does a medical transcription service work?

* Physicians dictate their notes into a recording device, usually a toll-free phone line or handheld digital recorder. Most medical transcription services support both these methods. Some services also accept recorded cassettes. Mp3 is the preferred sound format when using digital recorders, though other formats can also be used.

Medical Transcription Business Grows

MTS of Kansas will soon relocate its west Wichita office to Clifton Square, where president and CEO Donella Aubuchon started her medical transcription service in 1989.

During the past 20 years, Aubuchon's business has grown and transformed in many ways.

In addition to providing transcription for doctors at more than 20 facilities across Kansas, Aubuchon launched an online course last year to help train those interested in joining the field.

"As we grew, I had to reach out and hire more medical transcriptionists as individual contractors," Aubuchon said. "I looked at anybody and gave everybody what I felt was a fair shot. But I realized very quickly there were a lot of people who weren't being adequately trained."

The course, Advanced MT, offers training quite different from what Aubuchon received before starting her career as a transcriptionist for Wichita physician Michael Patton. Originally planning to be a registered nurse, Aubuchon, who worked in Patton's office, persuaded him to give her a chance to handle the day-to-day transcription tasks after she completed a course at Wichita Area Technical College.

Medical transcription job with no experience? How to find one.

How do I get a medical transcription job with no experience?

Today I got a question from reader named Laura. She asked:

Experience also has to be recent. Although I have about 5 years of experience, it is all over 9 years ago so I would have to start over as far as gaining experience. So these tips are useful to experienced transcriptionists as well who haven’t done transcription work recently.
Tip 1: Graduate from a program respected by companies that hire transcriptionsts to work remotely or offers job placement

I’m assuming she means how to get a medical transcription job with no experience. This is a very common question for new transcriptionists. If you haven’t graduated from any of the the “Big Three” medical transcription programs (Career Step, Andrews School, and M-Tec) and your school doesn’t offer job placement - it can be very difficult to get your foot in the door to work at home. If your goal is to work at home, the least experience required I’ve seen from online companies is one year. Even then, be prepared to be baptized by fire as you may get most of the harder jobs (hard to understand foreign accents, poor recordings) and be paid a lower rate at first.
Tip 2: Offer a discounted rate or free. Work as an intern or a volunteer

When I became a transcriptionist, I had not gone to school for it, so I had no education or experience. The best I had to offer was knowledge of medical terminology from a medical office program I had completed.

I approached a local medical transcription company here in town and offered to work for them on the dreaded graveyard shift for free for a couple months as an intern while they taught me. We both agreed if I did well enough, they would hire me. They hired me after a month (and I got re-introduced to the daylight!). It might be a good idea to contact local medical transcription services, doctors, clinics, hospitals and even morgues and ask about working for a discounted rate or if they would be able to offer you an internship.

Process of Legal Transcription

Now let us discuss the actual process of Legal Transcription. The most basic type of Legal Transcription is the transcription of audio files (mini cassettes, cassettes, CDs and DVDs) of legal proceeding in a digital format by attorneys or law firms. These audio files are recorded in a digital format and send via e-mail from the client to service provider. The Transcriptionist will download the files and play them and basically type them out as they listen to the files. Sometimes a client finds freelance transcriptionists who have undertaken course as discussed earlier and give them the transcription work. They are better than the young attorneys the Legal firms employ. The files sent to be transcribed should also include the information such as court information, docket number, dates attorneys and correct spelling of witnesses. The general rule is the more information the client gives, the better is the final Transcript.

There are many software which may be used for transcription purposes. These state of the art dictation and transcription software is a state of the art system which provides for computer based recordings, storage, transmission and transcription of all the voice dictation. There are some hardware such as headset and microphone which help in this process. Legal Transcription has various shades such as Court Proceedings transaction, Trials transaction, Wire Trap transaction, Legal letter transcription, Proof reading, Legal Pleadings, Witness Statements, Advice Transcriptions, Instructions to Counsel, Affidavits, Probate Forms, Particulars of Claims, Leases , wills Contracts, Disciplinary Hearings, Tribunal Transcriptions, Adjudication Panel Hearings, Reports, Briefs, court transcripts, Court proceedings, and so on. Transcription is not limited to any one special law but all law including real estates, criminal, family, personal injury, business, corporate family, Patents, trial laws and so on.

The need for Transcription of Medico-legal documents is on the rise these days. The other transcriptions related to medical and legal fields are Psychiatric Evaluations, Expert Witness, operative and procedure notes, drug trial studies, Outpatient and Inpatient summaries.

The property law Transcriptions may include Schedule of Dilapidations, Schedule of conditions, building surveys Reports, and Sales Particulars.
The normal speed of a Transcriber is that he will take about one hour to transcribe a clear 15-20 minutes of quality digital audio. Generally the transcribed material reaches the client after 24 hours from the time it is send to a Transcriber; this time also depends upon the client’s needs, state of the audio and the volume of work. The transcription service providers customize the services as needed by the clients.

Let us take a sample of a Transcription of a Legal Proceeding. A is to be read as Attorney and W as the Witness.

A. Did You receive the copy of the same letter?
W. Yes I did.

A. Do You remember the Date of receiving it?
W. According to the records of our Office it was received on 25th of January, 2005.

A. Did the other company receive the same letter?
W. Same letter? Ok Umnn. Yes they also received the copy of the same letter. But at that time we were not aware of the financial conditions of “L&M Co.”

Medical Transcription Training For Service Members

Military service has always been one of the highest callings to which young men and women can aspire. The desire to protect one's country and the freedoms it holds dear is strong in many people, and a career in the military holds many rewards. Some of those rewards are financial, and the military branches provide excellent support for those who seek to advance their education with career training.

Of course the financial and educational rewards are not the only motivating factors, and a career in military service provides many other benefits as well. From the satisfaction of serving one's country to the pride that comes from a job well done, there are many reasons why a career in the military is such a popular choice.

No matter which branch of the service you choose to make home, it is a good idea to explore the online education opportunities and one of the best options these day is medical transcription training. In fact an online medical transcription course is a perfect fit for the military lifestyle, since the medical transcription online program eliminates many of the burdens standing in the way of a traditional medical transcription course. Since a medical transcription online course can be earned from anywhere in the world, Soldiers, Sailors, Marines, and Airmen are free to learn wherever they may find themselves.

Choosing to study medical transcription is a great way for those military personnel to enhance their career prospects as well as their job satisfaction. A military background can be a big benefit when it comes time to seek a job in the private sector, and having solid medical training will make those former service members even more sought after.

But the benefits of an online medical transcription course go far beyond the service members themselves. To learn medical transcription is also a great choice for the spouses and family members of those in the military. Earning a medical transcription certificate is a great way for those spouses and family members to enhance both their earning power and their satisfaction. Survey after survey has shown that those with more education earn far more than their less educated peers, and the value of a medical transcription class from an accredited online medical transcription program simply cannot be denied.

Speech to Text Coming To iPhone?

According to a patent filing, Apple is working on speech-to-text technology for its iPhone and iPod product lines. Speech recognition could be the holy grail for data entry and retrieval on mobile devices, especially as they continue to shrink in size.

The Baltimore Sun found the patent and has included a diagram of how the system would work when composing an email.

There is a lot of engineering speak in the filing, but I could decipher a few tidbits of info - that and I've seen this stuff on Star Trek so I know how it is supposed to work. It seems the speech recognition module they are working on would be able to not only handle text but non-speech data as well, such as punctuation.

To varying degrees, this has been tried before on mobile devices. The most rudimentary are the voice snippets you can record into your phone for a few of your favorite contacts. One of the better speech tools for phones is byMicrosoft (NSDQ: MSFT) and called Voice Command. It is really pattern recognition. You can say "Call Sally Jones at work" and it will search through your contacts and find a name that matches what your digitized voice said and dials the number. You don't have to train it or record her name before you can use it. You can also ask it the time, battery level, signal strength, upcoming appointments and more. It is rather limiting though and there is no way to compose an email with it or tell it to do anything outside of dozen or so tasks it was written for.

I recall one demo by Bill Gates a few years ago where he spoke into a Pocket PC (that is what they were called way back when) and got nearly flawless text recognition out of it, but the trick there was the voice data was converted to digital then sent via wireless to a powerful server which did the heavy lifting. It returned the text to the screen. In the day's GPRS networks, it just wasn't feasible, which is why he was using WiFi. Today with 3G networks, it is more realistic, but you have the issue of who is going to pay for the server to potentially service hundreds of thousands of voices simultaneously?

Google Improves Transcription in Google Voice

When PCMag.com reviewed Google Voice back in June, the overall service earned our Editor's Choice for a unified messaging solution, but its transcription capabilities left a little something to be desired.

"Google Voice's voice mail transcription is spotty. Simple messages, with just a name and number, are no problem. But longer or low-volume messages are a tad more difficult," according to the review.

Other customers apparently had the same problem because Google on Friday announced that it has improved the transcription portion of Google Voice, and added punctuation capabilities.

Obtain A Degree From Medical Transcription School

Most survey reports about the job opportunities like the recent one of Federal Bureau of Labor Statistics show that there is tremendous demand of medical transcription professionals and what is more it tends to go further up inspite of current economic crisis. As a result, a sudden growth of medical transcription schools is being felt all over the world. So, neither we have shortage of schools nor the aspiring candidates. But the major problem is to identify the best suitable school to complete medical transcription course. After conducting a good research over this issue, I succeeded to rope in some parameters that will help you all to judge the standards and job market rank of short listed medical transcription schools.

Good medical transcription schools have comprehensive curriculum that is designed by experienced medical transcription professionals. Curriculum of these medical transcription schools is updated every year after analyzing the trend of the medical transcription job market. This practice leaves no voids in the curriculum as a result students comes out of medical transcription school completely trained to face the challenges posed by fast changing trends of health care industry. Good schools include all the relevant topics like physiology, human anatomy, medical terminology, abbreviations and disease processes etc also in their MTcourse. So, the students start working with confidence delivering error free results that makes a smooth way of progress for them.

Just obtaining a degree from medical transcription school serves no purpose unless it is backed with much needed practical experience. Selected medical transcription school must have strong focus upon practical application because in this field text knowledge without hands on experience is of no use. Without using medical transcription skill, you wouldn’t know the nature of the problems that arise while working as professional. That’s why; good medical transcription schools don’t award MT certificate or degree unless one satisfies the faculty with competency level. To improve expected competency level and expertise, completion of internship or training period within school is made part of the medical transcription course.

Before joining any medical transcription school, it is must to know and confirm the job placement record of previous years. The best way is to get some references and talk directly with the previous students. Another way, to judge the creditability of MT school is to keep an eye upon the recruiters and their preferences of schools.

Though most of the medical transcription training is not too much costly but even then you must be sure enough about the available financial aid.

All About Medical Transcription: Career and Education

In today's trying times when people are struggling to cope up with the economic meltdown, getting a job that pays well seems like a dream. Students and college graduates, looking forward to make a career, are disillusioned and confused about the right career choice. This is because most of the industries are sacking old employees rather than hiring new ones. However, there is one industry that is growing and will continue to grow in the future. The medical and health care industry! Regardless of the economic crisis, people are still falling ill, babies are being born, operations are being conducted, and diseases are being cured. Therefore, you can choose a career for yourself in the medical and health care industry.

One medial and health care career option that is attracting a lot of youngsters and graduates is that of a Medical Transcriptionist (MT). As an MT you will need to convert the recorded voice recordings of physicians and other health care experts into typed medical reports, administrative material, and correspondence material. Medical Transcription - Career, Home Business Or Both?

One of the great things about a career in medical transcription is that almost anyone can set up an office to handle the duties of a medical transcriptionist or a medical transcription service. Even the office requirements are fairly generic, meaning this has the potential for a home-based business.

A computer and Internet connection are probably your biggest needs for medical transcription, though technology has truly come a long way in this field. More than ever, there are products that can help you along this path, making your work easier and aiding in your speed and accuracy.

If you know little about medical transcriptions, you may have the idea that a doctor or other health care professional records information on a tape recorder and the medical transcriptionist simply writes whatever is recorded. Digital recordings have greatly aided the medical transcription industry. No longer is there a need to deal with scratchy tapes and poor sound quality.

The industry is also making it easy to make dictation easy for your clients. You don't even have to have the physical recording device used by the health care professionals in your hand. There are several options for telephone recording. You can set up a recorder especially designed for medical transcription on your own telephone line and have your clients call in their dictations. These systems are secure and easy to use for both you and the client. And once you have the dictations onto your personal recording machine, you can choose what to do with the information. You can route it to another destination (your computer dictation software, for example) or transcribe directly from the recorder.

Many of the recorders come with easy controls so that you can start, stop, pause, fast forward or replay segments of the recording using your feet or voice. This leaves your hands free to do their typing.

There are also several types of software available that will help you do your job more efficiently. It won't take long to figure out that Microsoft and other typing programs aren't ideal for medical transcription. The terms and proper names - including drug names - are not likely to be recognized. Mistakes are also likely to fall through the failings of those systems. Using the programs especially designed for the medical transcription industry will allow you to more accurately evaluate your work.

With the technology and training available, you can see that it's a fairly simple matter to become involved in this industry. Many people even do so from the comfort of their own homes. However, this isn't the home business for the busy parent who wants to work a few hours during their toddler's daily naptime. Most deadlines associated with medical transcription are fairly tight and there's no room for error.

There's no doubt that medical transcription isn't for everyone, but it is an important part of the health care industry and one that provides a good living for those who choose to pursue this particular aspect.

Teleseminar Transcription - Why Have Your Teleseminar Transcribed?

Teleseminar transcription is fast becoming very popular. Why have your teleseminar or webinar transcribed? Well, you can do a number of things with a transcript.

You can easily use portions of the transcript for a free report you may want to give away to potential clients. Or you may want to turn the transcript into an e-book to sell. This could pay for the cost of the transcription services possibly in a single sale of the e-book, depending on the price of the e-book and the length of the teleseminar.

Another reason to get your event transcribed is to possibly use portions on your website, which would allow the search engines to grab up any keywords in the text that they wouldn't find in the audio. This will only help you in getting your website ranked higher for your specific keywords.

Something else to keep in mind is that many people would much rather read a transcript than listen to an audio clip on your website. It is time consuming to sit in front of your computer while listening to a 30 to 60 minute audio, when you could curl up on your couch with a copy of a transcript of the same thing and read it at your leisure. I know I have bypassed listening to an audio just because I wouldn't have time to finish listening to it. If they had offered me a written copy of the material I could have read it in chunks as I had the time.

What You Might Not Know About Medical Transcription

Back in the day, medical transcription was something that a lot of doctors did not think a lot about. Their memoranda had to be taken down and it was done themselves or by someone close. Later though, they began to realize that this was counterproductive and they began to bring in people who could do the same for them.

The voice recognition system was developed in a large part as a compliment to regular medical transcription. Today, though it has grown so vastly that it might be the only means transcriptions is done, or even replace medical transcription on the whole. It is that fast… and accurate. Medical transcription today has become more of an online process. With the advent of the internet, you would need to enter the data you transcribe unto a website or data base from which the physician in need of it can retrieve it. That is why anyone anywhere can do it.

Today’s computer servers are where transcribed patient records are processed and archived digitally. Back in the late 20th century, medical transcriptionist had to put up with endless fines that took up so much space that you did not even like to be anywhere near them. Little wonder the profession did not become popular until lately.

It is my utmost desire that the first half of this article and the rest provides you with all the worthwhile information you need about “Medical Transcription or “Medical Transcription Jobs In Chennainai”, “Online Transcription Jobs” or even “Medical Transcription Companies India”,”.

No matter how hard they work at being medical transcriptionists, some folks will never get it, and this is not making a jest of them. Not everyone has the skill to become a great soccer player, however much they practice. You could only become really good, but you’d still have to allow the talented folks to do their thing.

Medical Transcription - Online Versus Classroom Training

If you've considered a career in medical transcription, you've probably already spent at least some time looking into the study options. And there are some serious decisions to be made when it comes to those training options. Should you study medical transcription in a classroom? Or would an online or correspondence course be better? It depends on your personality, your location and your needs.

Start by looking into schools in your area that offer medical transcription in a classroom setting. The sheer fact of your location in relation to any schools you'd be interested in attending may very well make the decision for you. While location is sometimes the deciding factor, don't let yourself be talked into taking what you consider to be second-rate medical transcription training just because it happens to be nearby. You can certainly get quality training from an online or correspondence school if there's nothing close to your location.

Your own personality - and limitations - should also play a role in your choice of training options. Do you work well without strict supervision and deadlines? Can you set goals for yourself and follow through? If your answer to those questions isn't a resounding "yes," you may not do well with online or correspondence training. There's a big difference between sitting in a classroom every day (or once a week) and being turned loose to do your own work. In a classroom, you're held responsible for keeping pace with the class. A correspondence class allows you to set your own pace. Some people simply need the structure of a classroom setting.

That's not to say that you have to attend classes in person to get that structure. Many distance learning programs allow students to "meet" with instructors and even classmates on a regular basis via computer. You simply set up a webcam at your location and you have the opportunity to interact with the teacher and even others taking the class. In some ways, this is the best of all possible worlds for the busy adult who still needs some structure to accomplish the goals of medical transcription training.

If you think the online "meeting" is a good idea for you, take a minute to look at your own computer and your connection. A dial-up connection with a slow computer may simply not be able to present the class in "real time." The lag can be annoying or even embarrassing, and you may find yourself losing out on some important points.

Regardless of what kind of training you choose, be wary of those offering claims that seem simply too good to be true. No one can guarantee that you'll find a job the week you complete your training and a school that offers those kinds of promises may very well be exaggerating other points of their training as well. Take time to be sure that any training facility you choose is reputable and that your hard work will end with training that will make you qualified to work in the medical transcription field.

Medical Transcription as Proven Accelerator of EHR Adoption

The transcription sector took a solution-focused message to Capitol Hill June 3-4 in response to President Obama's provisions and mandate for EHR adoption under the recent HITECH Act. With this administration's push to have both a definition and criteria for "meaningful use" determined by July of this year, the Medical Transcription Industry Association (MTIA) and the Association for Healthcare Documentation Integrity (AHDI) believe there is a critically narrow window of opportunity for this sector to ensure that such criteria includes provisions for the evolving role of transcription in hybrid capture, where complex narrative is preserved and quality outcomes, not just fiscal savings, drive adoption and integration. The HIT vendor community is positioning itself around key decision-makers in the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), in whose hands the determination of "meaningful use" now resides. Inarguably, the primary interest of those vendors is in securing widespread EHR adoption through HITECH provisions, and our message to legislators was that HHS needs others at the decision-making table whose interest is geared more toward how these technologies will be deployed and not whether they will be deployed.

Defining "meaningful use" is not the role of HIT but rather of clinicians and experts in health care documentation who can speak to the document workflow process and the complexities of capturing health stories in a way that informs clinical decision-making and promotes coordination of care. If the "meaningful use" definition is shaped only by the vendor community, there is great risk for EHR deployment to fall short of health care's goals for capturing and consuming health information. All stakeholders, most importantly the patient, lose under such an imprudent integration approach.

Medical Transcription Outsourcing Benefits

Medical transcription is one of the most widely outsourced jobs in the healthcare industry and is adopted as a part of easing the tedious process of medical records documentation. Processing of medical transcription jobs in-house means medical care providers have to invest a lot in terms of time and money for selecting and training the right manpower, apart from installing and maintaining costly infrastructure such as dictation equipments and computers. To keep operating costs low, outsourcing of medical transcription is the preferred choice for most healthcare firms operating in the US and UK.

A key factor that persuades developed economies such as the US to outsource their medical transcription jobs to developing countries such as India and the Philippines is the availability of cheap and qualified labor in these countries. The medical transcription firms in these countries have better infrastructures with backups for labor and internet and are thus capable of providing round-the-clock uninterrupted transcription services. The skills of medical transcriptionists in these countries include a better understanding of the spoken English language. The majority of these professionals have excellent academic qualifications and in-depth awareness of the subject.

Experienced trainers including doctors and language experts serving in medical transcription firms ensure that all their professionals are well trained in understanding medical terminologies including foreign dialects and medical terms. The intensive training provided at these outsourcing companies guarantees quality and speed. To ensure maximum accuracy in transcription jobs, all these transcription facilities have experienced editors and proofreaders. These firms also take special effort to update the knowledge base of their employees so that they are aware of the latest advanced medical treatments and medicines available in the market.

Another major benefit of outsourcing these medical transcription jobs is that backup copies of patient records are always available at the servers of these outsourcing companies and hence it is easier to search and access patient records which are years old. Moreover, these documents can be sent across multiple destinations through the internet so that doctors, regardless of their location can keep in touch with their patients and their medical treatments.

With affordable services being provided in a time-bound manner, all healthcare firms including hospitals, outpatient clinics, long term care facilities, nursing facilities, and individual physicians can now rely on these firms for smooth functioning. Today, most medical transcription providers make available other related services such as medical coding and patient bill processing. Thus with these medical transcription service providers ensuring flexible, fast and economic transcription services, medical care providers can concentrate on their core services and serve the needs of patients much better.

Transcription Technology Watch

This is the first in a series of quarterly articles that will focus on technologies relevant to medical transcription. Hopefully, maybe even those MTs who are techno-phobic will find some of the topics enlightening, stimulating and/or of value in making career decisions. But maybe not. To challenge that hope, I've started off with everyone's favorite technology: speech recognition. If you want to really stimulate a transcriptionist, just say "speech recognition." Or, better yet, assert that "speech recognition will forever change the process of converting physicians' thoughts and utterances into text." Then run for cover.

Every transcriptionist out there has heard some form of that assertion. Their reactions range from dismissal to fear to anger. So what's the truth? What does the future hold? Well, at some point in the future, there will be no medical transcription. Physicians will dictate into a PC or portable device; their speech will be converted to text; and the dictator will make any necessary corrections to finalize the report. No transcription expense. No transcription delay. But that future is at least 3 years off. Just kidding. It's way more than that. However, there is a future closer than that, related to speech recognition, which has some major implications for this industry.

Doctors hate doing anything that they believe is below their stature or slows down their ability to generate revenue. So we will not see "front-end" recognition-where they correct their own mistakes as described above-in most environments for many years. But there's a new game in town. It's called "back-end" speech recognition. Physicians don't change a thing in their dictation behavior. They continue babbling into telephones or some other dictation device just like they always have. But their voice files are now run through a server-based recognition engine, a draft is produced, and a medical editor corrects the errors both in recognition and dictation.

Be sure to check with your client before starting to transcribe the files, and be clear on all expectations, it will save you a lot of time. In terms of file output formatting, make sure the word processor or transcription software you use has the proper output formats. The Facts About Medical Billing Companies

The service offered by these companies serves as the key for a doctor, or any healthcare provider for that matter, to get paid. The healthcare industry in America is alive and well, but in spite of this, many doctors and other healthcare providers dont have any idea how to get themselves paid quickly and efficiently. The answer, of course, lies in insurance. And how are insurance claimed? This is where medical billing companies come in.

Medical billing companies are the ones who would submit claims to insurance companies in order to receive payment for services rendered by a healthcare provider. The process is basically the same for most insurance companies, regardless of whether they are a private company or a government-owned one.

The Billing Process

Essentially, the first step to jumpstart the whole billing process is the patients office visit. The healthcare provider will see the patient, diagnose his illness, and suggest treatment for such. Afterwards, depending on the service provided and the examination, the doctor then creates or updates the patients medical record. This record contains the summary of each of the patients visit, including details about treatment and demographic information related to the patient.

When you combine the treatment, diagnosis, and duration of service, this forms the procedure code, determined for usage in the billing of insurance. The doctor can of course take care of claims processing himself. However, the work can become tedious, especially when he should be focusing more on his healthcare practice than on insurance. Hence, the medical billing companies shoulder the burden for him.

The medical billing companies will use the information provided by the doctor to formulate the billing record. This record is generated manually or through the use of a software program. Often, the companies generate the billing record electronically. However, there are some that also produce hard copies as well (usually on a standardized form called an HCFA). This form includes the various diagnoses identified by numbers from the current ICD-9 manual.

It is the medical billing companies who will submit this billing record or claim to a clearinghouse. The clearinghouse acts as an intermediary for the information. Typically, when electronic billing is used, the medical billing companies must send their records to the clearinghouse.

Sometimes though, the record may also be sent directly to the insurance company. This is to ensure that everything is processed as efficiently as possible.

Doctors depend on medical billing companies for the money they get for the services they rendered. They can hardly find time to process everything themselves. The services offered are a great help in reducing the things they would have to worry about.
