Editorial: Doctors should take advantage of opportunity

Converting patients' health records is a necessary evolution that will make health care more efficient for taxpayers, patients and doctors.

But because converting paper records into electronic data is both laborious and expensive, only 20 percent of doctors nationwide have taken the plunge.

In South Dakota, the rate is a bit better but still not good enough. A federal program that will pay doctors to make the switch should help.

One obvious benefit is instantaneous access to records when a patient requires emergency care from an unfamiliar doctor or hospital. Instead of waiting for hard copy records or risking transcription errors over the telephone, doctors have immediate access to the information they'll need to treat the patient safely and effectively.
