Can You Really Work at Home in Medical Transcription?

Well, yes, absolutely. Thousands of people engaged in medical transcription work at home every day.

Working at home is a situation that many people aspire to, to escape the rat race of commuting, paying for childcare, wear and tear on the car. Medical Transcription does indeed offer that to those willing to go through the training and get some experience under their belts.

If you want to work from home, you basically have two options: You can telecommute as an employee, or you can do so by starting your own business. Medical Transcription is a career that provides you with both options.

There is a large market for medical transcriptionists. You can work from the hospital or physician's office or you can work from home. You can also start your own at-home medical transcription business. Medical transcription, at its core, is basically just listening to notes that a doctor has recorded about things such as exams, autopsies, operations and more, and typing out the recordings into a document that then is included in the patient's chart.

Using the power of the Internet, your transcription work can come to you as MP3 files over the web, so you needed get out of your chair to get your work! Medical transcription is not difficult to learn, but it can be somewhat expensive. There are a whole host of companies that offer distance learning via online courses, DVDs, books and CDs to help you learn the proper terminology so that when you graduate you can do the job well.

Make sure that you get your money's worth when you do make the plunge and sign up for training. As a medical transcriptionist, you will need to know medical jargon such as abbreviations, terminology and medical terms, and only the right resources will give you all the information that you need.

It can be somewhat difficult when just starting out in transcription to get a work-at-home position. Lots of employers out there want you to have some intense quality assurance scrutiny before letting you fly, so to speak. So they want you in house if possible. Indeed, the U.S. Dept. of Labor says that, really, over half of the transcriptionists in the workforce do actually work in an office instead of at home.

But don't let that discourage you! At-home positions can still be had today. All it takes is perseverance.

A good training school, one that is endorsed by AHDI, will have a placement assistance program, and they can let you know which companies are hiring for at-home work. And make sure you go to the transcription Internet forums and ask people which companies are most likely to hire you to work at home. Write down who they all are and how to contact them, and just go after them. Send a great cover letter, and call them as well. They will like your initiative.

One Rule for Google

John Gapper's blog : Google Voice, the company's new free phone service in the US (you cannot yet use it in other parts of the world) is a smart service that deserves to succeed. It does, however, place Google in a tricky position.

Google has come up with a clever way of circumventing the barrier to using Skype or other free services on phones. Instead of you dialing out, Google Voice calls your number and simultaneously connects you with the one you want, like an automated assistant. You either enter the number you want on a computer or you dial up the Google Voice number, enter the one you want to dial, and it connects you. There are some bells and whistles, including automated transcription of voicemail.

I have tried out Google Voice in beta and, although the service sounds complicated, it works smoothly and is a neat way of calling people in the US free, and those in other countries cheaply.

The killer application would be to be able to use Google Voice on a mobile phone, and avoid using minutes from your monthly plan. Accordingly, Google submitted a Google Voice app to Apple for the iPhone, but Apple is not co-operating. Google claims that Apple rejected its Google Voice application, while Apple insists that it is considering it. The affair is being investigated by Federal Communications Commission.

Medical Transcription Service - Can Outsourcing it Improve Quality and Lower Costs?

Want to organize physician's handwritten notes and prescriptions into electronic documents without spending a fortune? An outsourced medical transcription service is the perfect solution for you.

All medical institutions require computerization of medical notes for clean and compact record-keeping, insurance claims processing, quick reference, conferencing and various other reasons. Hospitals and clinics have long been hiring full time transcriptionists to do the same. But this is an expensive option and not the ideal solution if you have varying volume of transcription needs. Alternatively, you can give transcription duties to other clerical staff or use voice recognition software. But these solutions can be quite inaccurate, putting the health of your patients at stake. Your clerical staff may not be well trained for medical transcription and accuracy of voice recognition usually is too low to be useful. A medical transcription service gives you the best combination of expense, quality and accuracy.

How does a medical transcription service work?

* Physicians dictate their notes into a recording device, usually a toll-free phone line or handheld digital recorder. Most medical transcription services support both these methods. Some services also accept recorded cassettes. Mp3 is the preferred sound format when using digital recorders, though other formats can also be used.

Now let us discuss the actual process of Legal Transcription. The most basic type of Legal Transcription is the transcription of audio files (mini cassettes, cassettes, CDs and DVDs) of legal proceeding in a digital format by attorneys or law firms. These audio files are recorded in a digital format and send via e-mail from the client to service provider. The Transcriptionist will download the files and play them and basically type them out as they listen to the files. Sometimes a client finds freelance transcriptionists who have undertaken course as discussed earlier and give them the transcription work. They are better than the young attorneys the Legal firms employ. The files sent to be transcribed should also include the information such as court information, docket number, dates attorneys and correct spelling of witnesses. The general rule is the more information the client gives, the better is the final Transcript.

There are many software which may be used for transcription purposes. These state of the art dictation and transcription software is a state of the art system which provides for computer based recordings, storage, transmission and transcription of all the voice dictation. There are some hardware such as headset and microphone which help in this process. Transcription is not limited to any one special law but all law including real estates, criminal, family, personal injury, business, corporate family, Patents, trial laws and so on.

The need for Transcription of Medico-legal documents is on the rise these days. The other transcriptions related to medical and legal fields are Psychiatric Evaluations, Expert Witness, operative and procedure notes, drug trial studies, Outpatient and Inpatient summaries.

The property law Transcriptions may include Schedule of Dilapidations, Schedule of conditions, building surveys Reports, and Sales Particulars.
The normal speed of a Transcriber is that he will take about one hour to transcribe a clear 15-20 minutes of quality digital audio. Generally the transcribed material reaches the client after 24 hours from the time it is send to a Transcriber; this time also depends upon the client’s needs, state of the audio and the volume of work. The transcription service providers customize the services as needed by the clients.

Let us take a sample of a Transcription of a Legal Proceeding. A is to be read as Attorney and W as the Witness.

A. Did You receive the copy of the same letter?
W. Yes I did.

A. Do You remember the Date of receiving it?
W. According to the records of our Office it was received on 25th of January, 2005.

A. Did the other company receive the same letter?
W. Same letter? Ok Umnn. Yes they also received the copy of the same letter. But at that time we were not aware of the financial conditions of “L&M Co.”

There are many different types of Legal Transcription work such as court reporting, legal documentation, and data entry work, legal coding, litigation support, legal scoping, legal research, legal animation and immigration paper work.

In recent times the litigation process has increased man folds. The administrative law (local, state and federal government) requires massive record-keeping related to transcription of recorded hearing. Various departments in government have expressed the need of more staff. Assistance from trained people is a welcome alternative to attorneys. At the same time the large legal transcription companies hire home-based transcriptionists. At one point of time there is a huge vacancy for legal transcriptions in thousands for working in the areas such as law firms, corporations and corporate legal departments, financial institutions, insurance companies, real estate and title agencies, state and federal government agencies, courts, public defenders’ and prosecutors’ offices, public utility companies and community legal service programs.

Nevertheless there is still a dearth of well qualified and experienced Transcriptionists. Some of the basic qualities required for Legal transcription are working knowledge of legal terminology, the English language, and use of correct grammar. It is also a good idea to become acquainted with the fundamentals of law, the court systems and litigation and to know how a law office works in order to ensure success in the business. For accurate and high quality transcription one is required to undertake some study and practice. Nowadays there are numerous courses available online, at home or school. Almost all companies provide for some basic training before appointing a Transcriptionist as it is also important to understand the business regarding which transcription is required. Technically, one is exposed to various software and research methodology and internet. You also learn how to build your own Cybrary (Cyber Library) which is very helpful in legal transcription. .

Medical Transcription as Proven Accelerator of EHR Adoption

The transcription sector took a solution-focused message to Capitol Hill June 3-4 in response to President Obama's provisions and mandate for EHR adoption under the recent HITECH Act. With this administration's push to have both a definition and criteria for "meaningful use" determined by July of this year, the Medical Transcription Industry Association (MTIA) and the Association for Healthcare Documentation Integrity (AHDI) believe there is a critically narrow window of opportunity for this sector to ensure that such criteria includes provisions for the evolving role of transcription in hybrid capture, where complex narrative is preserved and quality outcomes, not just fiscal savings, drive adoption and integration. The HIT vendor community is positioning itself around key decision-makers in the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), in whose hands the determination of "meaningful use" now resides. Inarguably, the primary interest of those vendors is in securing widespread EHR adoption through HITECH provisions, and our message to legislators was that HHS needs others at the decision-making table whose interest is geared more toward how these technologies will be deployed and not whether they will be deployed.

Defining "meaningful use" is not the role of HIT but rather of clinicians and experts in health care documentation who can speak to the document workflow process and the complexities of capturing health stories in a way that informs clinical decision-making and promotes coordination of care. If the "meaningful use" definition is shaped only by the vendor community, there is great risk for EHR deployment to fall short of health care's goals for capturing and consuming health information. All stakeholders, most importantly the patient, lose under such an imprudent integration approach.

Jobs Online Doing Transcription

Good news, online transcription positions don't have to be purely medical. There are many different types of transcription services available, the key is finding the one that captures and keeps your interest. Transcription services can involve E-Books, Tele-seminars, Business Meetings, Webinars, Radio Talk Shows, Talk Show Interviews, Focus Groups, Meetings, Home Study Courses and various business based correspondences. And clients will range from Authors, Seminar Speakers, Talk Show Hosts, Coaches and Business or Marketing Managers.

Equipment is one of the most important factors when considering a home based career in transcription services. It is best to do some research on the equipment that a professional transcription service would use. It could be as easy as purchasing transcription software, a head-set and a foot-pedal, but some companies may require you to have more elaborate equipment. Depending on the type of transcription they specialize in, a company may require you to have a secure internet connection and firewall for file transfer activities.

As different types of transcription, such as interview transcription, may have more than one speaker, it will take a high level of concentration to provide a professional output. For example, a radio talk show will be formatted differently than an e-book. Files that have more than one speaker may require more attention to formatting detail. Be sure to check with your client before starting to transcribe the files, and be clear on all expectations, it will save you a lot of time. In terms of file output formatting, make sure the word processor or transcription software you use has the proper output formats. Most basic word processors have file conversion capabilities such as RTF, HTML and Plain Text, so this is not a major issue.

The Evolution of Medical Transcription

More than 60 years ago, medical transcription was developed as a method to assist physicians and medical facilities with accurate recording and filing of patient information related to treatment. Prior to this, the physicians were responsible for jotting down pertinent information in the patient's chart and this was often times misinterpreted if read by anyone other than the physician, primarily because of abbreviated forms. This illegible writing and terminology was not understood by everyone.

The first MTs were usually only trained to copy notes written by physicians and these were then placed in patient's records. Later, Dictaphones and typewriters were added to the list of equipment found in medical offices. This was a tedious task because the typewriters were slow. If an error was made, it had to be corrected by erasers or correction tape. Further evolution saw typewriters that added correction capabilities, carbon copies as well as components to change font of the typed material. In the 1970s and 1980s, some medical groups were beginning to see the need for more training in the area of medical transcription. This led to formal training programs that were designed to incorporate medical terminology, anatomy and typing to more accurately equip persons in this field. This was a tremendous success and medical transcription became a profession in demand.

And just as we were getting comfortable in our new skins as MTs, we entered into the age of computers. With this new age, medical transcription became an organized business. Because of the high cost involved in this process, medical transcription service organizations (MTSOs) sprang up to meet the needs of the industry. They offered competitive prices for the completion of dictated reports while maintaining the quality control and technology processes in house. These companies provided manpower and equipment for professional interpretation of all medical records. The MT was taken from the office setting and was able to ultimately work at home with the same benefits that used to only be offered working on site. This was a real boon for the MTs, as it eliminated the usual expenses incurred by a working person, i.e. transportation, clothing costs, child care, etc.

Medical Transcription sector to boom despite recession: report

Despite global economic downtrend, the Medical Transcription (MT) industry is looking for a further growth buoyed by a report of the NASSCOM stating that recession has not hit the healthcare industry.

Reverse is the trend in medical transcription outsourcing in the US, which is witnessing agonising attrition in large scale in IT, financial, manufacturing and other sectors.

As per a NASSCOM report, the MT industry will be worth Rs 40 billion by 2010 and could employ as many as 50,000 people. It predicts that this industry is here to stay for at least 10 years.

It estimated the size of the US MT industry, which is in the range of around $ 12 million in 2005, would reach $ 16.8 billion by 2010. The work offshored was expected to be in the region of $ 860 million in 2010, of which India is expected to capture $ 647 million. India remained a preferred offshore destination primarily due to availability of manpower and industry maturity.

The report also expected the employee strength of 18,000 in 2006 in India-based MT vendors would reach 52,000 by 2010. For an industry that witnessed too much crowding, too fast in India, a report conducted by US-based Stevens International Consulting expected the value of MT outsourcing in the US to double by 2005 to $ 4 billion. India could take as much as two-thirds of that increase, providing work to 45,000 transcribers.

The Dark Side of Medical Transcription

By peeking into this dark side, we hope to help other MTs avoid the troubles that befell our three sources.

The Tale of the Rubber Checks
Joan Edwards (not her real name), like Trudy Schaefer Looney, got into transcription on a whim 14 years ago. "It was sort of by fluke," she said. "I basically trained myself. I started out with a doctor and his wife. It was a brand new practice, and we sort of trained each other."

Edwards worked there for 4 years until the clinic closed due to lack of business. She moved on from there, getting her own accounts and working directly for clinics. Everything in her MT world was fine until she started working for a medical transcription service organization (MTSO) 2 years ago. The warning signs were there. The company said it would get direct deposit for its 120 MTs nationwide. It didn't. The promised health care coverage never showed up. A notice was sent out by the company saying that 10 oncology MTs quit, all in the same day. And MTs were forbidden by the company from contacting each other, even if they worked on the same accounts. Also, a lot of times Edwards and other MTs saw discrepancies in the line counts. They thought they typed more lines than they were paid for, but the only way to prove it would be to purchase the company's own line counting software, which would cost a hefty $300.
